TEN STEP PROGRAM
FOR COPING WITH
CHRONIC PAIN

SPIRITUALLY WRITTEN SUPPORT ORIENTED

By: Tom Hodges
Founder of Pain Talk, a support group for people in chronic pain

A five-car accident left me with chronic pain for years. During those years, in my desperate search for help, I founded "Pain Talk", a free support group for fellow pain sufferers. A local church was kind enough to let us hold weekly meetings.

"I received your booklet the day I was in an auto accident. It was a great comfort to me. It has also been beneficial for emotional pain as well as physical pain."

Joan Hardy,
S.F. Bay Area

We learned in our meetings that the word "cope" (in the dictionary) means "to contend on equal terms with some success". Our primary focus then became how to cope and find solutions. Members related their personal experiences with pain, but were reminded that everything suggested in the meetings was optional. No ONE treatment was to be endorsed over any other because every person is an individual and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another.

At the end of each meeting, we held hands and recited the serenity prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."

In our "Pain Talk" meetings we were free to discuss our feelings. We taught each other what we could do for ourselves. As a group we strived to find constructive lifestyle adjustments. We developed positive attitude changes through sharing, understanding and much humor. We found strength in knowing we were not alone.

"To the many sufferers of chronic pain, this sensitive sharing of the author’s own pain odyssey cannot help but be a true inspiration."

Sister Mary McCarthy,
San Francisco, CA

As the support group grew, I was also inundated with phone calls from pain sufferers who were physically unable to attend the meetings. In order to provide help to these callers, I wrote the "Pain Talk" booklet to share with them the coping steps that worked for me. To date, almost 30,000 free booklets have been distributed.

"This small booklet is a treasure, a fountain of consolation. Meditate devotedly on these Ten Steps, one by one, and God will surely reward you."

"This booklet on coping with pain is a sound resource, scripturally-based, which will strengthen the faith of many who live with chronic pain."

Rev. Diane Dulin
Community United Church of Christ San Carlos, California

WHEN PAIN CONTINUES RELENTLESSLY, YOU START ASKING SOME SERIOUS QUESTIONS.
Will my life ever be normal again?
Will I be helpless?
Will people think I'm a complainer?
Will I be a hardship on family or friends?
Will the pain ever go away?
If it doesn't, how will I cope?

The advantage of having the book around your home - "Pain Talk" was written to offer you solutions and encouragement. When you are having one of those dark days and you just don't feel like searching on-line for support, you can lift your spirits by picking up the booklet and reading an inspirational page or two. You will find instant help at your fingertips! It is also a thoughtful gift for a friend in pain.
